I am a self-confessed stripe lover, often resorting to one of my many breton t-shirts when I’m having an “I’ve got nothing to wear” day. Since the day when Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel threw on a fisherman’s striped top with palazzo pants whilst on holiday in Brittany, France, this style has never really been out of, well, style.

Despite our enduring love of all things stripey, this season the fashion crowd are forgoing the stripes for another classic pattern: polka dots. Scott Schuman, aka The Sartorialist, has been snapping spots in all of the style capitals during Fashion Month:

Here are just a few of my favourite items spotted (hohoho) on the UK and Irish high street:

I am also a stripe lover. They are timeless, just as everything else Coco Chanel has invented. I find stripes more effortlessly stylish than polka dots, although I love that pleated dress with Peter Pan collar.
I'm such a polka dot fanatic! Love the Tesco dress — peter pan collars and polka dots all in one fabulous little number!
I love that bathing suit! So retro. And I must admit I'm having a really hard time giving up stripes for polka dots…I like the photo of the girl from the Sartorialist that did them both :)

that bathing suit is divine :)
stripes are my most favorite, but these polka dots are a great alternative! love the tesco dress – the cut is so cute!
I used to think spots looked a bit too twee, but now I am loving them – it all started with a cheap primark dress that I bought last summer for holidays in Croatia and now i'm hooked.
I love when people clash spots and stripes, I just can't seem to make it work somehow.
And how gorgeous is Audrey Tatou? JEALOUS!!
I desperately want that gorgeous swimming costume! Ahhh, lovely! I also love Breton tops!xxxxxxxx

Agree that Audrey Tatou is gorgeous!! She's the perfect Coco.
Good picture choices! Stylish ladies.
I only have one polka-dotted piece of clothing, but it's a favourite. And it's nearly warm enough to wear it!
I love stripes too, but have been catching myself wearing (and buying) more and more polkadots!!! Great post! I just LOVE the sartorialist as well!
The first scarf I ever bought was an Echo with coffee colored polka dots on a cream background. That was 1965. I still have it, with added real coffee polka dots. It went with my natural linen suit, which, alas, as gone bye-bye. Polka dots in all sizes are feminine and win out over stripes any spring day.
I looove the bathing suit!! Soo cuute!
Love polka dots as well – just got a brilliant pair of pants from Magaschoni – polka dots away!
It's so fantastic that you still love it after all this time! In the words of YSL, "fashions fade but style is eternal"!

Ooh I've never heard of Magaschoni, must have a peek!
